Lesson 5 – Relationships

Saya awali pelajaran kali ini kembali ke kisah tentang Adam, David dan Sophie yang berada dalam satu pesawat terbang. Masih ingat, kan?

possessive adjectives

Tak disangka-sangka di dalam pesawat tersebut Adam bertemu dengan Peter, tetangganya.

  • Peter: 'Adam, hi! What a surprise to see you here!' (Adam, hai! Sungguh sebuah kejutan melihatmu di sini!)
  • Adam: 'Oh, hi Peter. Glad to see you.' (Oh, hai Peter. Senang bertemu kamu.)
  • Peter: 'Glad to see you, too. Are you alone?' (Senang bertemu kamu juga. Apakah kamu sendirian?)
  • Adam: 'Yes, I am. But I have new friends.' (Ya, benar. Tapi aku punya teman-teman baru.) Kemudian Adam memperkenalkan Peter kepada David dan Sophie.
  • Adam: 'Peter, this is Sophie and this is her brother David. They are my new friends.' (Peter, ini Sophie dan ini kakaknya, David. Mereka teman-teman baruku.)
  • Peter: 'Hello, nice to meet you Sophie, and nice to meet you David.' (Halo, senang bertemu kamu Sophie dan senang bertemu kamu David.)
  • David & Sophie: 'Nice to meet you, too Peter.' (Senang bertemu kamu juga, Peter.)
  • Adam: 'Peter is my neighbor.' (Peter tetanggaku.)
  • Sophie: 'Your neighbor?' Oh, what a nice coincidence.' (Tetanggamu? Oh, sungguh sebuah kebetulan yang menyenangkan.)
  • Adam: 'Yes, it is. By the way, Peter is a great singer. His voice is awesome.' (Ya, memang. Ngomong-ngomong, Peter seorang penyanyi hebat. Suaranya keren.)
  • David: 'Wow. That's great. Our hobby is listening to music. Maybe you can sing for us.' (Wow, hebat. Hobi kami mendengarkan musik. Mungkin kamu bisa bernyanyi untuk kami.)
  • Peter: 'Hahaha, sure. Maybe next time.' (Hahaha, tentu. Mungkin lain kali.)

Pembaca yang baik, kalau Anda perhatikan percakapan di atas, ada beberapa kata yang saya beri warna biru, seperti: her, my, your, his, our.

Dalam bahasa Inggris, kata-kata tersebut dinamakan possessive adjectives (kata sifat yang menyatakan kepemilikan).

Apa saja? Simak baik-baik ulasan berikut.

Grammar - Possessive Adjectives

Subject Pronouns Possessive Adjectives
I my
You your
He his
She her
We our
They their
It its

Possessive adjective selalu ditempatkan sebelum noun (kata benda).

[Possessive Adjective + Noun]

Supaya Anda lebih jelas, simak contoh penggunaannya berikut:

  • This is Mr. Dibyo. He's my teacher. (Ini Pak Dibyo. Beliau guruku.)
  • Is Mrs. Suzanna your mother? (Apakah bu Suzanna ibumu?)
  • Andri has a pillow. His pillow is very soft. (Andri punya sebuah bantal. Bantalnya sangat lembut.)
  • Tasya has a doll. Her doll is expensive. (Tasya punya sebuah boneka. Bonekanya mahal.)
  • Robert and Stephanie are not our children. (Robert dan Stephanie bukan anak-anak kami.)
  • They have a cat. Their cat is white. (Mereka punya seekor kucing. Kucing mereka putih.)
  • This is our dog. Its name is Woofy. (Ini anjing kami. Namanya Woofy.)

Gampang banget.

Sir, misalnya saya mau ngomong: 'Pak Jono adalah supirku.' Kan bahasa Inggrisnya: 'Mr. Jono is my driver.' Betul ya, Sir?

Betul.

Tapi gimana kalau saya mau ngomong begini: 'Pak Ikhsan adalah supirnya Maria'

Oh, gampang juga. Cukup tambahkan apostrophe -s ('s) setelah noun atau pronoun yang menjadi pemiliknya. Dalam hal ini pemilik supir adalah Maria. Jadi ngomongnya:

'Mr. Ikhsan is Maria's driver.' Ini dinamakan possessive nouns.

Contoh lainnya: 'Dian's manager is Mr. Hartono.' (Manajernya Dian adalah Pak Hartono.)

atau: 'Mr. Hartono is Dian's manager.' (Pak Hartono adalah manajernya Dian.)

I see.. Okay Sir, I understand. Paham. Ada lagi, Sir. Misalnya gini, saya mau ngomong kalimat lain: 'Kantorku kecil tapi itu kantorku.’ Berarti untuk kalimat pertama dan kedua saya ngomongnya: 'My office is small, but it’s my office.’  Bener begitu, Sir??

Coba cermati ilmu berikut:

Grammar - Possessive Pronouns

Subject Pronouns Possessive Adjectives Possessive Pronouns
I my mine     (milikku)
You your yours    (milikmu/milik kalian)
He his his         (miliknya)
She her hers      (miliknya)
We our ours      (milik kami/milik kita)
They their theirs    (milik mereka)
It its (tidak ada possessive pronoun)

Kolom kedua yakni possessive adjective sudah Anda pelajari sebelumnya. Sekarang perhatikan kolom KETIGA. Itulah bentuk-bentuk yang dinamakan Possessive Pronouns.

Sekali lagi fungsinya ialah untuk menghindari pengulangan informasi yang sudah jelas, sehingga tidak membingungkan.

Mau saya kasih contoh? Yang saya cetak tebal hitam di bawah ini adalah contoh possessive adjective dan yang cetak tebal biru adalah possessive pronouns:

  • My laptop is black. The laptop is mine. (Laptopku hitam. Laptop tersebut milikku.)
  • Your book is new. The book is yours. (Bukumu baru. Buku tersebut milikmu.)
  • His pillow is soft. The pillow is his. (Bantalnya lembut. Bantal tersebut miliknya.)
  • Her doll is expensive. The doll is hers. (Bonekanya mahal. Boneka tersebut miliknya.)
  • Our house is old. The house is ours. (Rumah kami tua. Rumah tersebut milik kami.)
  • Their car is slow. The car is theirs. (Mobil mereka pelan. Mobil tersebut milik mereka.)

Hmm.. Bagaimana, sudah clear?

Anda pengen lebih fasih dan lancar lagi? LATIHAN mas! PRACTICE, PRACTICE and PRACTICE. Gunakan harta karun vocab-vocab yang sudah Anda kuasai. Lalu variasikan dengan possessive adjective dan possessive pronouns yang sudah Anda pelajari barusan.
