Lesson 7 – Is There A Bookstore Near Here?

  • Sophie: 'David, we need a map.' (David, kita butuh peta.)
  • David: 'Yes, let's go to the bookstore and buy a map.'
  • Sophie: 'Okay, let's ask the policeman over there.' (Oke, ayo kita tanya polisi di sana.)
  • David: 'Good morning, Sir.' (Selamat pagi, Pak.)
  • Policeman: 'Good morning, can I help you?' (Selamat pagi. Apa yang bisa saya bantu?)
  • David: 'Is there a bookstore near here?' (Adakah sebuah toko buku di dekat sini?')
  • Policeman: 'Yes, there is. Go two blocks and turn left. Then go to the corner of Teuku Umar Street and Diponegoro Street. Go straight. The bookstore is on your left.' Lurus saja. Toko bukunya ada di sebelah kiri kalian.)
  • David & Sophie: 'Thank you.' (Terimakasih.)
  • Policeman: 'You're welcome.' (Sama-sama.)

Vocabulary. Places in the community.
(Kosakata. Tempat-tempat di masyarakat.)

Restaurant : Restoran Bank : Bank Post office : Kantor pos
School : Sekolah Bookstore : Toko buku Travel agency : Agen travel
Hospital : Rumah Sakit Newsstand : Kios koran Pharmacy : Apotek
Train station : Stasiun KA Bus station : Terminal Bis Taxi stand : Tempat taksi
Airport : Pelabuhan udara Seaport : Pelabuhan laut Park : Taman
Police station : Kantor polisi Supermarket : Supermarket Gas station : Pom bensin
Mosque : Masjid Church : Gereja Library : Perpustakaan

Setelah perempatan belok kanan.” Begitu ya biasanya. Nah, jadi sekarang saya mau tambahkan vocabs mengenai locations and directions.

Vocabulary. Locations and directions.
(Kosakata. Lokasi dan arah.)

Contoh dalam kalimat:

  • The supermarket is on Clark Street. (Supermarket ada di Jalan Clark.)
  • The church is down the street. (Gereja berada di ujung jalan.)
  • The bank is across the street. (Bank ada di seberang jalan.)
  • The newsstand is around the corner. (Kios koran ada di tikungan.)
  • The police station is on the corner of Smith and Mark.

  • The grocery is between King Street and South Place.

Terus apalagi? Benar, cara menanyakan arah yang belum.

Jangan sampai Anda kesasar di lorong-lorong kota London hanya gara-gara malu bertanya.

Now please pay attention – Sekarang tolong perhatikan.

Grammar - 'be': questions with 'Where' / Subject pronoun 'It'.

Untuk menanyakan tempat atau lokasi, kita bisa memakai kata tanya 'Where' (dimana/kemana) diikuti dengan to be -nya serta tempat yang ingin kita tanyakan.

Where is the bookstore? / Where’s the bookstore? It’s down the street on the right.
Where is the train station? / Where’s the train station? It’s next to the shopping mall.
Where is the mosque? / Where’s the mosque? It’s on Clark Street.
Where is the bank? / Where’s the bank? It’s around the corner.
Where is the gift shop? / Where’s the gift shop? It’s across the street.

Grammar - 'There is'.

Selain menggunakan kata tanya 'Where', kita juga bisa menanyakan sebuah tempat dengan memakai kata 'There is' (terdapat/ada). Untuk membuat kalimat tanya, tinggal memindah to be 'is' ke depan 'there'.

Is there a bookstore near here? Yes. There’s a bookstore down the street.
Is there a pharmacy near here? Yes, there is. / No, there’s not. Or: No, there isn’t.
Is there a library in this town? Yes, there is. / No, there’s not. Or: No, there isn’t.

How do I get to the ........ ?'
